Day 39 (Mar 7) Part 2 - A Fantastic Korean Dinner

Location: Okachimachi, Tokyo, Japan
Weather: maybe 6 degrees?
Author: Amy (I've done a lot, haven't I?)

We met up with some friends on Saturday night. Uno, our new Korean friend, was kind enough to arrange for us to try out this Korean restaurant (Memory of Kanton?) in Okachimachi (near Ueno). The restaurant was packed! We found out that this place is a pretty popular place (and I can see why now after eating there). Thank you, Uno, for booking a table for us!

Korean celebrities who have visited this restaurant.

Including Joo Ji Hoon from the Korean drama, Goong!

Other guests (non-celebrities)

Us!

We got a few drinks to try. Of course, we had soju. We also tried this raspberry wine which was sweet and yummy. I had a couple of shots of the soju and the wine. Got pretty red by the end of dinner...

Our drinks that night

Bok Bun Ja (Raspberry wine with 16% alcohol)

Side dishes for everyone. We had 5 types, which I thought was quite little for a Korean restaurant.

We started dinner with Samgyupssal (pork) wrapped in lettuce. I loved it! The hotplate the restaurant used was tipped so that any oil would immediately drain away from the hotplate. We didn't have to cook for ourselves. There was someone who would constantly come and turn the meat and make sure we were well served.

Samgyupssal (Pork belly, I think). This is fast becoming my favourite Korean dish.

Usually, the meat is put in lettuce, with some sesame oil and gochujang, plus some onions or garlic.

We also had dokbugi (rice cakes in chilli-tomatoish sauce, with egg, noodles, carrots and tofu/fish cake)

We had Korean pancake as well but the pictures were blurry so I didn't put that up. After the pork, dokbugi and pancake, we were pretty stuffed. But we still had one more dish! It was a hotpot with noodles (instant ramen kind), sausages, tofu, and cheese! Uno told us that during the Korean war when food was scarce, the Koreans would ask for food from the US army. The US staple then was hotdog/sausage and probably cheese. That's why when the Koreans cooked, they put in all the food they could find and that's how this noodle hotpot was created.

We were stuffed!! But the night was still young so we went to a karaoke place. A few of them had never gone to a karaoke place before so we decided to check it out.

At the karaoke, warming up our voices.

Selecting songs

A romantic duo

It was a very interesting night because there was such a mix of different nationalities and culture
(Korean, Swedish, German, Mexican, French & Chinese-Australian) and yet we got along famously and had a lot of fun. There were a few German and Spanish songs sung as several of them knew common European songs. And lots of Disney songs as well cause EVERYONE knows Disney...

It was a very enjoyable Saturday. We decided to meet up every weekend and try something new each time. So next weekend is tempura (famous restaurant) in Asakusa, followed by ferry ride to Odaiba.

Catch you all later!
